Leeway

I built Leeway to keep track of my AI usage without switching between provider dashboards. Across different tools and accounts, I want to understand what I have used, how close I am to each limit, and when more usage becomes available. Leeway brings that information into one view.

Leeway was previously called Usageview. I renamed the same product as it grew beyond the original menu-bar utility; this is the continuation of that build, not a separate app.

I'm currently building Leeway. The main interface is an account deck: compact cards that bring each account’s usage status, remaining allowance, and reset time together.

The first design decision is to make the numbers unambiguous. Usage is what an account has consumed; remaining allowance is what it can still use within a provider’s limit. A value labeled “72% left” means 72% remains, not 72% used. Reset times explain when allowance becomes available again.

The account cards prioritize usage status and remaining allowance, followed by account identity and reset times. More detailed activity and cost information sits behind that overview where available. The aim is to make the current state easy to understand before asking someone to inspect the details.

I use provider color to distinguish accounts, with clearly labeled usage windows and values carrying the meaning. Color alone cannot explain whether an account is close to its limit or waiting for allowance to reset. Multiple accounts belong in the main experience because switching between them is part of the problem Leeway is solving.

The design system makes geometry and motion shared decisions. Surface roles, nested corner radii, spacing, and provider marks have a common contract, while each platform maps them to its own controls. The aim is a recognizable product that still belongs on the device where it runs.

A menu-bar icon sits over a changing desktop, not a predictable page background. Its contrast needs to follow the actual menu-bar appearance. Inside the app, account colors need their own foreground relationships in both light and dark appearances. Those small decisions matter more here than an ornamental animation.

Navigation follows the same principle. Account setup, everyday usage, pairing, and recovery are documented as connected flows. Reduced motion, keyboard access, and readable status labels are part of that design contract. Leeway is still evolving; the goal remains a clear view of AI usage, with more detail available when needed.
